Dan Swenson serves as a Healthcare Capital Strategies Senior Consultant at Balefire, working directly with independent hospitals and healthcare organizations to build institutional capital strategies that support their long-term mission and financial sustainability. He partners with CEOs, CFOs, and boards to assess reserve portfolios, evaluate governance structures, and design investment frameworks that strengthen financial performance while maintaining appropriate liquidity and risk discipline.
Dan’s perspective comes from more than 25 years serving as a hospital CEO, where he led operations, governance, and strategic planning for community-based healthcare organizations. His background gave him firsthand insight into the financial and operational pressures independent hospitals face, from capital access and liquidity management to board dynamics and long-term sustainability decisions. Dan’s path included leadership roles at CentraCare Long Prairie, Appleton Area Health, and Cooperstown Medical Center, where he served as President or CEO across three organizations over more than two decades. He holds an MBA and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), and remains a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator.
Today, Dan leads client work from discovery through implementation, aligning capital strategy with operational priorities and board oversight along the way. Rather than treating investment strategy as a standalone exercise, he ties it directly to the real-world demands healthcare organizations face, including funding priorities, workforce investment, and preserving independence.

Daniel lives in Alexandria, Minnesota, with his wife, Sue. They have twin sons, Cody and Conner, and a daughter, Kendall. In his free time, Daniel enjoys golfing, barbecuing, traveling, spending time on the lake, and attending high school and college athletic events.
